TRYOUTS
- Tryouts for the 2024 Boys Volleyball Team at CCA
- Tryouts are TBD based on gym space availability.
- Please email Coach Tucker if you have questions in the meantime.
TRYOUT F.A.Q.'S:
- When is the Indoor Boys Volleyball Season? Spring. Practices usually start in early February and the first game is usually mid February. The last league games are in the end of April, with varsity playoff games in May.
- Is Boys Volleyball a CIF Sport? Yes, boys indoor volleyball is a CIF San Diego Spring Season Sport. CIF rules apply to all aspects of the game, practice, rankings, playoffs, etc. Beach Volleyball (which takes place in the Fall) is NOT a CIF sport yet.
- When can I tryout? Tryout dates are controlled by the CIF Calendar. This changes every year and can be altered due to issues such as a pandemic. In general, Boys Volleyball Tryouts take place the first or second week in February.
- Do I Attend All Tryout Days or Just One? Tryouts will last multiple days. Students must attend all published days of tryouts. If you are going to miss any tryout days, you must email Coach Tucker in advance with the specifics.
- Can I still tryout if I missed the first tryout day(s)? Yes! Make sure you are cleared (see below), and they go to the remaining tryout days/times. If you are not cleared yet and still want to participate, please start the clearance process immediately and email Coach Tucker for next steps.
- Which Tryout Time Should I Attend? There are different tryout times for Varsity, JV & Novice. All 12th graders and varsity players from previous years should attend the varsity tryout times. All 9th, 10th and 11th graders should plan to attend the first day of tryouts at the JV time slot. Some players will be asked to attend both JV and Varsity tryouts based on their performance at tryouts, so be sure to keep an open schedule to attend both time slots if invited.
- How many boys volleyball teams does CCA have? CIF allows our school to have three teams ... Varsity, Junior Varsity and Novice. Each team can have 8-18 players per squad. CCA plays in a very competitive league and usually only the most skilled players make the varsity team. While skill level is a major determining factor for placement of players between the JV & Novice teams, sometimes the team's positional needs are put first. It is important to note that unlike "club" volleyball, high school volleyball does not guarantee playing time. Coaches have the sole discretion to decide who plays and who doesn't. At CCA, effort and attitude play a major role in determining play time.
- Only "Cleared" Students will be Allowed to Tryout: All athletes who want to tryout must complete the required "Clearance" process. This must be completed prior to the start of tryouts. Returning players must complete this process EVERY year. Clearance does NOT carry over from previous years! The clearance process requires a Health form that is signed by a medical professional within 6 months of tryouts, so plan ahead! The CCA Athletics Staff has to work through hundreds of clearances in a one week period for a dozen Spring Sports. It takes them a week or so to get the clearances done after all the forms are submitted, so be sure to finalize all your submissions at least a full week before the first tryout date. Requests for clearances in the couple days leading up to tryouts will not be finalized, so be sure to submit early. Use the link below for full clearance information. If you were cleared for a Fall/Winter sport at CCA this year, you still must complete the online clearance form ... just follow the instructions for a quicker Spring clearance.
- How Can I Prepare for the High School Volleyball Season in Advance? If you are able, take a "learn to play volleyball" class at one of our local San Diego (or North County SD) Volleyball Clubs. There are over a dozen great clubs in the area! Ask your friends for recommendations, but a few good options are SoCal, Seaside, Wave, Coast and Genuine/SD Beach. If you already know how to play, club volleyball team experience is a huge plus. Also, please consider playing in the CCA Fall Beach Volleyball Club. Finally, as Boys Indoor Volleyball is a "Spring" CIF sport, all the games are played during CCA's Spring Semester. As many of the away games require "early release" from class at the end of the school day, consider requesting a free 4th period or a less rigorous class for your fourth period in the Spring Semester.
All CCA Students must complete the Athletic Clearance Process prior to trying out.
